The Lot for March
This month’s edition of The Lot Radio was no doubt influenced by the events of the week focusing on what some are branding as “The Year of Alice.” So of course, the breathtaking 15 minutes of “Journey in Satchidananda” –rendered live before Swamiji himself at Carnegie Hall– is a centerpiece of the first hour of the show. Try not to think of how different the historical record might look if Impulse had decided back in 1971: “Hey, it’s a total lay-up to just release this smoking live album featuring three of our major spiritual jazz artists. And look, we have the master tapes right here! Cha-ching!” Instead, we feel blessed just to hear a 2-track reference tape that sat in storage for 50 years. It’s worth the wait.
It was a cold day shot through with curiously strong March sun, cold and bright out. A listener in Detroit bemoaned the 3 inches of snow falling there, as the ambient feel giving way to something with a bit more light and energy.
